Romantic Sibiu and the "Route in the Sky"

The tour starts on the old road, traversing the cosy villages along the river of legends, Arges, the Dacians' guide towards mountain and plane.

Day 1: Bucharest - Curtea de Arges - Olt Valley - Cozia - Sibiu

At Curtea de Arges you'll visit the Princely Court surrounded by high and thick walls made of river stones. The Church in the Court Park is the oldest historical monument in Romania totally preserved. Prince Neagoe Basarab, built here an outstanding monastery. Its unique architecture impressed the popular imagination, giving birth to the ballads of Master Manole and his beloved wife, Ana.

Stop at Cozia Monastery, built 600 years ago, by Vlad the Impaler's grand father, Mircea cel Batrin, under the shelter of the mountains, on the Right Bank of Olt River, next to the Transylvanian border.

Soon you'll arrive in Land of Lovistea where the faiths, myths, rites and legends intersect giving birth to genuine stories about pixies and dragons. You'll cross the Land of Lovistea in daylight to arrive in Sibiu, but not before passing by the Emperor Franz Joseph's well or the Red Tower, a medieval fortification, initially part of a larger fortification built by Iancu de Hunedoara, in the 15th century. The tradition says that its name was given after the battle of 1493 when Turks were defeated here. The tower was painted in red with Turks blood. But the Austrian Empress Maria Teresa found this place suitable for her crazy love affairs.

Finally you arrive in Sibiu, one of the most romantic cities of Romania, astonishing its visitors with its medieval look: narrow and crooked streets, old Gothic houses with triangle gables and pointed roofs. The Main Square was not long time ago the meeting point for public festivals or capital executions.

Day 2 - Sibiu - Cirtisoara - Transfaragarasan Road - Curtea de Arges - Bucharest

You'll pass by the highest waterfall in Romania (Bilea Cascada), the one of the largest ice lakes in Romania (Bilea Lac), the highest tunnel in Romania (linking the counties Sibiu and Vilcea).

You'll cross Fagaras, the highest range of mountains in Romania and you'll drive by the sea between the mountains, Vidraru Lake. And in the end you'll pay a visit to Dracula at his historical citadel of Poienari that is if you dare to walk up 1400 stairs.
